Sharing Our Experience with the World
The National CPTC Advisory Board has two talks scheduled at DEF CON this year; one will be set in Packet Hacking Village, and the other is scheduled in Ethics Village. We’re looking forward to sharing our experience running this competition with the world.
Packet Hacking Village
Presentation: 4 Years and 10,000+ Hours Later: Lessons Learned from Running a National Penetration Testing Competition
Speakers: Dan Borges (@1njection) and Tom Kopchak (@tomkopchak)
Location: The Tower of Doom, 26th Floor at Bally’s
Date/Time: Friday, August 9th at 10:00am
Information: Wall of Sheep Blog
In this talk, Dan Borges and Tom Kopchak will go in-depth about what makes CPTC special and how this event has been based on each of their individual professional experiences.
The discussion will include the planning of the event, how vulnerabilities were employed in the competition environment, and the world building efforts to support the mock organization we create each year. The culmination of this talk will be the announcement of the 2019 CPTC theme – one that will be very appropriate given current events.
Ethics Village
Panel Discussion: The Ethical Challenges of Pentesting and Consulting
Speakers: Dan Borges (@1njection), Tom Kopchak (@tomkopchak), Lucas Morris (@lucasjmorris), and Jason Ross (@rossja)
Location: Flamingo, Reno II
Date/Time: Saturday, August 10th at 4:00pm
Information: Ethics Village
In this talk, Dan and Tom will be joined by Lucas Morris and Jason Ross for a panel discussion on the ethical issues involved with teaching pentesting and consulting. This conversation will build on our earlier Wall of Sheep talk, focusing on how the CPTC Advisory Board integrates ethics into the event. This will include how ethical challenges that came up while running the event were handled, with in-depth discussions about the various scenarios and how the responses to those scenarios were based on professional experiences.
Finally, there will be an opportunity for audience discussion and feedback on each scenario, so you’ll have an opportunity to interact with members of the panel.
Stop By and Say Hi!
We hope you’ll be able to join us at either of these talks if you’re in Las Vegas for DEF CON. Stop by, say hi, and pick up a CPTC sticker while you’re here!
